Situated on a steep, sun filled, south-facing slope above the meandering River Yeo, Down St Mary Vineyard enjoys a benign microclimate in the beautiful heart of rural mid Devon. First planted in 1986, the area under vines now extends to 5 ˝ acres with vines of different varieties chosen mainly for their excellence in the cooler, damper conditions of the English climate and for their early ripening potential. The soil is warm Devon shale and the vines are trained on the Double Guyot system. These conditions make for fresh, clear, white wines. The dry whites are deliciously fruity and the medium dry whites are mellow and aromatic. An award winning range of wines is produced – from light easy drinking table wines, to regional and quality wines with delicious fruit on the palate and a long, complex finish. A sparkling wine is also available. Produced by the classic methode traditionelle of bottle fermentation, the result is a dry, biscuity, full-flavoured fizz. A public footpath runs along the top of the vineyard from which there are glorious views of the river valley, summer and winter. |
